Artist Statement
My studio practice and research explores the themes of power and resistance and the interplay between these two forces. My work is firmly about symbolic representations of these forces and I consider my paintings visual prompts for the viewer to explore the complexity of the topsy /turvy relationship between these forces as it pertains to the modern world and/or their own personal lives.
I try to unpack this complex relationship at the very base level of attraction and repulsion and consciously choose symbols such as, the tiger and wisteria, male and female figures, steak and knives as representations. These representations are layered up with juxtapositions of opposites to draw the viewer into my visual commentary and observations on the relationship between power and resistance. My aim is for the viewer to consider the various manifestations of the play between the two, as it occurs historically, philosophically, collectively and ultimately personally.
Experimenting with the surfaces that I choose to paint onto is something which I value within my artistic practice. I work mostly with acrylic and oil on canvas and/or paper but also enjoy experimenting with other surfaces, eg. prosthetic limbs, leather and wood.
I am particularly fascinated with the work of Allyson Keehan, Jesse Mockrin, Frederic William Burton and Johannes Vermeer and consider them to be some of my greatest inspirations in terms of creating my own work.
