Discovery Learning

Using the ideas behind Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory, I planned that the first years would take part in an inquiry-based learning activity today to teach them how to mix differet tints, tones and shades of the one colour when painting. They had to experiment through mixing their designated primary colour with white, grey and black to discover what types of colours would form once the 2 paints had been mixed. The students loved this and engaged very well with the fun hand - drawn worksheet. The painting tools and materials handout also worked really well as it showed within one A4 page lost of possibilities for students to consider when they are painting, it gave them a variety of other methods to consider when painting ie. Spray paint, using a roller, priming paper and experimenting with paint using sponges. This handout also worked well as it was interactive and engaging for students as we discussed what the tools and materials were and they labelled them as we went through the sheet, this gave students a nice opportunity to engage in literacy skills throughout what would have otherwise been a very practical lesson.
